European Protected Species
European Protected Species (EPS) include all UK species of bats, dormouse, great crested newt, otter, natterjack toad, sand lizard and smooth snake.
They undertook an assessment of bats and wildlife present for a Grade II building consent application. Very efficient, extremely helpful, and modestly priced. I have no hesitation in recommending them
When EPS have been recorded on site during a ‘Preliminary Ecological Appraisal’, a ‘Protected Species Building Assessment’ or a ‘Preliminary Ground Level Tree Roost Assessment’, further surveys are often required to assess species and population size.
Based on the proposed development and resulting impacts, an EPS mitigation licence may be required. This would be necessary if the impacts to an EPS included:
- Capturing, killing, disturbance or injury
- Damaging or destroying a breeding or resting place
- Obstructing access to a resting or sheltering place
EPS mitigation licence can only be applied for once planning permission has been granted and based on sound survey data been collected via ‘Protected Species – Phase 2’ Surveys. A licence is obtained from the appropriate government organisation with additional documents written to demonstrate how the favourable conservation status of the species will be maintained.
Colmer Ecology is experienced in applying and being granted EPS licences following current guidance, survey protocols as well as mitigation guidelines. If you need to find out more or for further information, contact us to discuss your requirements.
